Women’s Rugby League World Cup shapes as tighest yet as gap closes on hosts Australia | Megan Maurice

The three-time world champion Jillaroos maintain a strong edge but their title defence may be under threat from New Zealand and England Four years is a long time in women’s sport. While men’s sport is ever evolving and growing, the speed of change in the women’s game is much faster, as time lost when they were sidelined in professional sport at an increasingly rapid pace is made up. The last time the Rugby League World Cup was held, the women’s game was in a very different place. The NRLW contained just six teams, playing five rounds of competition, which was positioned almost as a sideshow to the men’s finals. Since then, it has doubled in size to 12 teams and 11 rounds, getting genuine airtime across the Australian winter. Continue reading...

Gary Waddell dies aged 74: the brilliant Australian actor who turned small roles into great ones

Waddell appeared in countless films and TV shows, often as rough-as-guts characters, though he was rarely given the screen time he deserved The great Australian actor Gary Waddell – known for his gooseflesh-raising ability to portray rough-as-guts characters so real you swear you’ve met them before – has died aged 74. Waddell was a fixture of the Australian film and TV industry for decades, bursting on to the scene, bleary-eyed and angsty in Bert Deling’s cult classic drug drama Pure Shit, a production so notorious that its first public screening, in 1976, was raided by the vice squad. This legitimately great film – the best ever made about heroin addiction and subculture in Australia – was famously described as “the most evil film I’ve ever seen” by Melbourne Herald critic Andrew McKay (an example of hysterical overreach if ever there was one, although, as they say, those were different times). It remains a thrilling piece of social realist cinema, full of drug-taking, petty crime and tomfoolery, with the story revolving around Waddell’s character Lou, who arrives five minutes in, grousing about how he “hasn’t had a hit for 10 hours”. Australian supermarket mustard taste test: the most intense is ‘an excellent torture device’

In a taste test of almost 40 jars, Nicholas Jordan and friends experience the full spectrum of mustards, from timid to nuclear * Get our weekend culture and lifestyle email Foods designed to be eaten on their own need balance; without, it you’ll struggle to get through a meal. Condiments have different rules. They’re designed to be eaten with something. Their role is to adjust or intensify what is already on the plate, bun or roll. Mustards should be intense. I’m not saying they need to be nuclear, but at the very least they need to shock me, and make my taste buds feel as if they’ve been pricked by a bed of nails. I want my sausage delivered, if not with radioactive fallout, then with a side of light acupuncture. Anything less is pathetic – likely made by cowards and the spice intolerant. At the very least, they need to taste like mustard – that is, mustard seeds, the ingredient they’re based on. That was how I was thinking before I tasted 39 jars of it. Continue reading...

The rise of cashless prompt screens is compelling customers to tip to avoid awkwardness rather than reward service. Pubs, cafes, beauty salons, farmers’ markets, rideshares, food delivery services and even online shopping – the option to tip can present itself wherever you tap your card. Until recently, tipping “wasn’t a big thing in Australia”, says Kieran Scott, a Brisbane-based web designer. “[Businesses] basically never asked if you wanted to leave a tip,” he says. Rather it was something you did “out of your own choice”. Sign up for our rundown of must-reads, pop culture and tips for the weekend, every Sunday morning Continue reading...
